The photographer, Ellyas Pereira, stated on Facebook that he and his mother were walking along Grande Rivere beach in Trinidad when they came across the enormous beast lost in a body of water created by the storm.

A mini-lake had formed at the mouth of the river, limiting access to the beach. He said the female leatherback had just laid her eggs and had completely turned around.

Pereira, a 17-year-old aspiring marine biologist, led the turtle back to the sea.

In an email to the Huffington publication, she said: “It felt incredible to know that I had given something back to the ocean that had filled me with so much admiration and awe. .”

Later that day, he met with a turtle ecologist, who told him that if he hadn’t saved the leatherback turtle, it would have died in the river.

The turtle is revered by cultures around the world for its cultural importance. Because he is one of its five main creators, the serious people of Sonora, Mexico, consider the leatherback turtle to be culturally significant.
